We Christians are joyfully incarnational, but sometimes our enthusiasm for matter leads to the feeling that it’s all too much. We have mounds of stuff – and some of it (books! music!) is good. Our calendars are crammed with meeting dates – many of them for worthy causes. What might our lives be like if we were to let go of so many things and to cut back on so much activity? This quiet day will focus on both the practical and spiritual aspects of downsizing. Through a series of meditations and structured quiet times, participants will be invited to make space in their lives for the freer movement of the Spirit.
The Very Rev. Canon Carole McGowan, SCHC is Canon for Formation and Dean of the Bishop’s School for Ministry in the Diocese of the Rio Grande. She was rector of a parish in Albuquerque, New Mexico, for 22 years. Before the congregation’s annual rummage sale she would lead a “Clutter Group” that considered ways of letting go of things (and putting them in the sale!). Over time, she and the group came to recognize the myriad spiritual issues they had related to “stuff.”
