The Philadelphia 11: Film Screening August 18, 2024
About the Program
In early 1974, the movement to ordain women in the Episcopal Church encountered resistance and opposition. By July, eleven women deacons, four bishops and a church full of supporters gathered in Philadelphia to ordain those women as priests The Philadelphia Eleven tells the story of the movement, the ordination and the pressure to include these irregularly ordained women within the life of the Episcopal Church.
This compelling documentary explores what led these remarkable women to follow their call despite threats to their personal safety and the risk of rejection by the church they loved. The heroic actions of these women and their supporters challenged the Episcopal Church to include all the people of God in leadership and ministry.
