Spiritual Direction for Those With Addictions

Some of those who come for spiritual direction are actively in their addictions, some in recovery; some are suffering with the addictions of a loved one. The addiction may look like numbing (drugs, alcohol, food, computer games, gambling, shopping). It might be dressed up like religion (doing all the “right” things). Whatever the addiction, we developed the habit hoping to ease the pain of the heart’s hurts. It begins in the heart, mind and spirit. The heart because we have that proverbial “hole” that only God can fill, the mind because what we think, we become and our spirit becomes crushed. This workshop will explore the role of spiritual direction in the healing process of those suffering from addiction or who are in recovery.

Patricia Mitchell is certified in Women’s Ministries at the Boston campus of Gordon Conwell Theological Seminary and is an ordained chaplain. She was trained in spiritual direction at the Mercy Center in Biddeford, Maine, in 2002. She is also trained and active in the Ignatian Spiritual Exercises and is a twelve-step sponsor. She is especially eager to share her understanding and experience of the role spiritual direction can play in the addiction recovery process.
